The EPA RRP Rule
Renovation, Repair and Painting Program Rule
As of April 22, 2010 the EPA RRP Rule has gone into effect. This rule states that contractors who perform renovation, repairs and painting must train to certify in lead-safe work practices before renovating older housing. New certification is required for all home improvement activity that disturbs more than 6 square feet of interior or 20 square feet of exterior in housing built before 1978 and in any child-occupied facility. The potential penalties for not following these regulations are stiff. Contractors can be fined up to $37,500 per violoation, per day.
